A new gateway to Visakhapatnam tourism will open from the sea
Visakhapatnam. Visakhapatnam, previously known as a destination accessible primarily by road and air, is now preparing to welcome tourists via the sea as well. The International Cruise Terminal developed in the city is a crucial component of this transformation.
Launched in September 2023, the terminal aims to connect Visakhapatnam to domestic and international cruise networks. The scope of maritime tourism could expand further once systems are established to transport cruise passengers from the port to the city's major tourist attractions.
Terminal Equipped with Modern Facilities
The cruise terminal at Visakhapatnam Port has been constructed over an area of approximately 4,580 square meters. It features facilities ranging from passenger lounges to customs and immigration services to ensure smooth passenger movement.
In addition to quarantine counters, baggage handling, scanning, security checks, and a concourse, the terminal offers dining, entertainment, and shopping facilities. Amenities such as health services, currency exchange, CCTV surveillance, and parking make it a comprehensive passenger facility center for cruise travelers.
The 300-Meter Berth: A Key Feature
One of the terminal's most significant features is a berth approximately 300 meters long. This facility is vital for the docking of cruise ships and the boarding and disembarking of passengers.
In cruise tourism, the ship's arrival at the port is the initial stage; subsequently, it is essential to transport passengers to the city's major attractions quickly. Consequently, integrating the cruise terminal with the local tourism network is considered a pivotal part of this entire model.
Options Ranging from Beaches to Hills and Temples
Visakhapatnam’s unique appeal lies in its diverse offerings, which combine coastal attractions with hills, natural landscapes, and religious tourism sites. Coastal destinations such as RK Beach, Kailasagiri, and Yarada Beach are likely to become major attractions for cruise passengers. Meanwhile, locations like Simhachalam and Araku Valley further enhance the city's tourism diversity. Tour packages can be designed with the cruise ships' docking duration in mind, allowing passengers to visit multiple key attractions within a short timeframe.
Benefits to Reach Local Markets
The impact of increased cruise tourism will not be limited to just the port and tourist sites. The influx of passengers could boost activities for hotels, restaurants, taxi services, local transport, and tour operators.
Cruise passengers could also emerge as a new customer base for local guides, handicrafts, souvenirs, and retail businesses. Integrating local products and tourist attractions into cruise packages could extend the benefits to small business owners as well.
Boosting Cruise Tourism in the Country
The Central Government launched the 'Cruise Bharat Mission' in September 2024. Under this initiative, efforts are underway to increase the number of cruise passengers, develop new cruise routes, and improve passenger amenities at ports.
According to the government, 272 cruise calls and 4.92 lakh cruise passengers were recorded in the country during the 2024-25 fiscal year. The mission aims to increase the number of sea cruise passengers to 10 lakh by 2029.
A Potential Key Stopover on the East Coast
Visakhapatnam's location on the east coast and the diversity of its surrounding tourist attractions make it an ideal stopover for cruise tourism. Tourists visiting the city can experience the sea, mountains, religious sites, and natural beauty all within the same region.
Establishing a robust network of transport and tour services connecting the terminal to these attractions could make exploring the city much easier for cruise passengers.
Cruise Terminal to Transform the Tourism Landscape
Visakhapatnam is already recognized as a city defined by the sea and its natural beauty. The International Cruise Terminal is now becoming a means to link this identity with international maritime tourism.
With a 300-meter cruise berth, modern passenger amenities, and nearby tourist attractions, the foundation is in place to draw tourists arriving by sea. As cruise services expand, activities in sectors such as hotels, transportation, local markets, and other services are also likely to increase alongside tourism.
